China has been actively developing bionic robotic fish for various applications, including river protection and environmental monitoring. These robotic fish mimic the swimming motion of real fish, offering advantages such as high propulsion efficiency, robust maneuverability, and low noise emission, making them less disruptive to aquatic life compared to traditional propeller-driven underwater vehicles.
One notable example is a bionic robotic fish developed by Wuhan University, deployed to aid in Yangtze River protection. This robot, measuring 53 centimeters in length, is designed to swim like a real fish and collect ecological data, providing crucial support for water environment governance. It's equipped with obstacle avoidance sensors and AI learning capabilities, allowing it to navigate and avoid underwater obstacles. Its core technology lies in simulating fish movement mechanisms for efficient swimming, with potential uses in underwater exploration, water quality monitoring, and ecological protection.
Another development from Beihang University includes a robotic fish for patrolling China's Taihu Lake. This larger robot (1.2m long, 0.5m high, 40kg) can maintain a speed of 3.0 km/h for 20 hours and transmit real-time water quality data. It also features an advanced maneuvering control system for setting monitoring depths and operating trajectories, contributing to comprehensive water conservation efforts.
The use of these bionic robotic fish is proving effective in addressing environmental challenges. For instance, in Taihu Lake, the deployment of robotic fish contributed to a significant decrease in the area and density of cyanobacterial blooms in 2023. Beyond river protection, Chinese scientists have also developed robotic fish designed to remove microplastics from oceans by absorbing them through their soft, flexible bodies.
These innovations highlight China's commitment to leveraging advanced robotics and bionics for environmental protection and sustainable development.
